The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the gaming and hotel expansion of Akwesasne Mohawk Casino on November 2. With over 50 local dignitaries and community contributors in attendance, it was announced the $74 million project will create 350 construction jobs over the next 20 months.

Some of the major changes to the casino include a 150-room hotel, a new vestibule, an expansion to the casino floor, a spa and pool facilities and a fitness area. However, the big announcement was the relocation of the current Mohawk Bingo Palace and Class II gaming facilities to a renovated sprung structure at the casino.

“We’ll soon have both gaming facilities (the casino and bingo palace) under the same roof,” announced St. Regis Mohawk Tribe Chief Ron Lafrance Jr.

The Tribe is working towards self-sufficiency and believe its gaming facilities greatly benefit the community of Akwesasne. Since 2003, Akwesasne Mohawk Gaming enterprises have generated over $79 million to the St. Regis Tribe. This revenue has been the primary source for the Tribal General Fund.

In May 2013 the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino completed a new $74 million expansion that included a 7-story hotel and a new bingo hall. The original Mohawk Bingo Palace was located down State Route 37 and operated since May 1985. That facility was closed and relocated inside the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino. The grand opening was March 13, 2013.

The revenues from gaming properties help support local programs and services, including elder care, health, education, law enforcement and more. St. Regis Mohawk Tribe Chief Mark Garrow said “this is a shining example of our staff and the community coming together” to make the expansion project possible.

Other changes coming to the casino are renovations to the cage, parking, the Native Harvest Restaurant, additional seating at Sticks Sports Bar, a centralized bar and lounge, RV parking facilities, meeting and conference rooms and a new maintenance facility.

Emily Lauzon Appointed to General Manager

AKWESASNE — On Monday, September 14, 2020, Mohawk Gaming Enterprises, LLC, (MGE) announced the appointment of Emily Lauzon as the General Manager of the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort (AMCR), following the departure of Todd Papineau. Lauzon brings strength and depth of experience, previously serving in the capacity of the Acting General Manager while national searches were conducted for the replacement of former General Managers, Bassney and Keel. Lauzon has led the Casino’s team as the Assistant General Manager since 2013.

During Papineau’s tenure, the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort undertook significant enhancements, including the addition of sportsbook betting and a $1.9M project to transform Rapids Food Court into the new Stick’s Sportsbook and Grill. “On behalf of the Board of Managers, we extend our best wishes to Todd and his family in the next chapter of his career,” stated Chairperson Shelley Jacobs.

Emily Lauzon brings eighteen years of Class II and III executive gaming operations experience to the team, but equally as important during this pandemic, the Board has every confidence she will lead with stability and direction in uncertain times. Lauzon began her career with AMCR in the start-up phase in 1999 as the Associate Relations Manager. In 2012, she was chosen to lead the Mohawk Bingo Palace through the merger with the Casino, and as GM, she ensured a successful transition for the team while the operations were integrated.

“Emily has a deep-rooted commitment to the Casino and its employees. Her work is fueled by the greater needs within Akwesasne. Her tireless effort to strengthen our community is reflected in her three-year term served as a Tribal Sub-Chief and participation on local boards. The Casino is our region’s top employer, and the most vital funding source for our people. We have every confidence in her ability to lead the Casino through this pandemic as our General Manager,” shared the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Chiefs.

Lauzon holds a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Labor Relations with a minor in Business Economics from SUNY Potsdam, and has boosted her resume with a certification from the University of Las Vegas in the Executive Development Program. Lauzon is currently serving a fourth term on the Board of Education at Salmon River Central School as President, and has been actively involved in public safety as a member of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Police Commission Board since December 2019.

Commenting on her appointment, Ms. Lauzon expressed, “I am humbled and honored to be appointed as the General Manager of our Casino. We are the economic engine for the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe, and I thank Tribal Council and the MGE Board for the confidence bestowed upon me. We’ve resumed operations mid-pandemic with a well-executed strategy and a focus on the safety and public health of our guests, our employees and our community. I take this responsibility very seriously, and I am committed to the mission and financial success of our property.”
